Synopsis:
Over many years, various models and frameworks have been developed to explain the type of knowledge and capabilities educators need to support and further the digital literacy of students. This keynote will argue the need to move from the current ‘multiple literacies’ approach that historically has focused on the mastery of discrete technical or multimodal information skills, to present a framework illustrating a more holistic perspective reflecting an expanded digital competency view it suggests educators needed to optimise benefits from new and emerging technologies in their professional practice. To illustrate one type of new competency needed, the presentation will introduce an accessible and straightforward method for educators to use learning analytics (LA) to understand how students interact with online video learning objects during independent study, and whether this interaction is likely to represent Active learning engagement. Such knowledge is important to educators for improving the design of online learning assets and understanding how they can best be used to enhance students’ learning outcomes.
